a. What is a computer?
Ans: A computer is an electronic device that accepts data and instructions,

 processes them, and gives meaningful results i.e. information. 
b. How does a computer work?
Ans: Computer work in three steps Input, Process, and output.
c. What is Input?
Ans: The data and instructions which we enter into the computer are known as INPUT.
d. What is processing?
Ans: When we input raw data into the computer, the computer changes the data into

 meaningful information which is called processing. 
e. What is the output?
Ans: After processing the data, the computer gives a result

or information which is known as OUTPUT.
f. Name any two storage devices.
Ans: Two examples of Storage devices are: Hard disk and Pendrive

Ans: Abacus is the first calculating device developed by the Chinese about 3000 BC. 
b. Who invented Napier's bone? And when?

Ans: Napier's Bone was invented by John Napier in 1617 AD.
c. What is the slide rule? Who invented it?

Ans: The slide rule is the first analog calculating device. It was developed by William Oughtred. 
d. What is Pascaline? What does it contain?

Ans: Pascaline is the first mechanical Calculator invented by Blaise Pascal in 1642. It Contains eight dials, gears, and wheels.

e. Who is known as the father of Computers?

Ans: Charles Babbage is known as the father of computers because modern computers are based on his idea and technology. 
f. Who is known as the first programmer?

Ans: Lady Augusta Ade Lovelace is known as the first programmer.
g. What did Dr. Herman Hollerith invent?

Ans: Dr. Herman Hollerith invented the tabulating machine.
h. Which is the first computer? Who invented it and what was it named?

Ans: Electro the mechanical computer was the first computer it was invented by Howard Aiken. It was called Mark-I.
i What was the first digital computer? Who invented it and when?

Ans: Atanasoff Berry Computer (ABC) was the first digital computer. It was invented by Dr. John Vincent Atanasoff and his assistant Clifford Berry in 1942.

Ans: ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator was the first general-purpose computer. It was invented by John William Mauchly and John Presper Eckert in 1946 AD.

Ans: EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Computer was the first practical stored-program computer it was invented by Maurice Wilkes and his team.

Ans: EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer) was invented on the concept of John Von Neumann.

a. What types of computer is the General Purpose Computer?

Ans: A computer that can be used for performing different task is different fields like at home, school, office etc. are known as General Purpose Computer.

b. What types of computer is the Special Purpose Computer? 

Ans: Special Purpose Computer are the computer that can perform only single specific task. 

c. List different types of computers on the basic of task.

Ans: The different types of computer on the basic of task are: Analog Computer, Digital Computer and Hybrid Computer.

d. Mention the difference between Analog and digital computer.

Ans: On the basic of size the types of computer are:

2. Answer the following questions: 
a. What are the two electrical conditions that a computer understands?

Ans: A computer understands two states of electrical conditions ON or OFF. 
 b. List the digits used for the binary number system.

Ans: 0 and 1 are the digits used for the binary number system.
c. List the digits used for the decimal number system.

Ans: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are the digits used for decimal number system.
d. How the digits are used in the binary number system? How are they read?

Ans: In a binary number system 0 represents the OFF stage of electricity and 1 represents the ON state of electricity. The binary number is read digit by digit for example 10 is read as One Zero. 
e. What are BITs and Bytes? 

Ans: Bit is the smallest unit of data and it is in single digits of the binary number system and the combination of 8 bits is called bytes.

f. What is binary code?

Ans: The changing of the data in terms 0s and 1s is called binary conversion and the result of this conversion is called binary code. 
g. What is the basic unit of storage/ data?

Ans: The basic unit of storage/data is bytes. 
h. What is ASCII?

Ans: Binary code is known as ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
i. What is the ASCII value of the letter A"?

Ans: The ASCII value of the letter "A" is 01000001.

a. What is a system unit?

Ans: System unit is the most important part of the computer. b. List the major devices contained in the System Unit.

Ans: The major devices contained in the system unit are: the motherboard, processor, power supply, main memory, etc. C. What is CPU? Write its different sections.

Ans: CPU is the main processing unit of a computer it is also called the brain of a computer. The different sections of CPU are: ALU (arithmetic logic unit) CU (control unit) MU (memory unit) d. What is a Port?

Ans: A port is an interface or a connecting point where a peripheral device is connected. e. What is the use of a DVD drive?

Ans: DVD drive is used for inserting DVD for watching the movie, Installing new programs. f. What is the function of the power supply box?

Ans: Power supply box converts the high current (220 volt) into low voltage (5 or 12 volt) g.Why is a USB port very useful?

Ans: A USB port is very useful for connecting peripheral devices like mobile, Pendrive, Mouse, Keyboard, etc. h. What is a motherboard? What does it contain?

Ans: Motherboard is the main circuit board of the computer. It contains a microprocessor, RAM, Video card, Expansion card, Slots, etc. i. What are expansion slots?

Ans: Expansion slots are the extra slots in the motherboard which are used to plug in extension cards that provide extra options. Eg. TV cards, Sound cards, etc.

i. What is the use of CMOS Battery?

Ans: CMOS Battery is used to hold the configuration of the system and it is also powers the internal clock of the computer. k. What does the variety of color lights indicate?

Ans: The variety of color lights indicates that the computer is busy in processing. I. What is the use of video cards?

Ans: Video cards are used to display graphics on the computer screen. m. What is the main memory? List its types.

Ans: The memory that is used to store program, instructions, and currently used data in the computer. RAM and ROM are the types of main memory. n. What is the use of the reset button?

Ans: Reset button is used to restart the computer without disconnecting the power supply. o. What is the function of BIOS?

Ans: The function of BIOS is to control the presence of hard disk, floppy disk, CDROM, memory, mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer, and other peripheral devices.

a. What is a Desktop?

Ans: The desktop is the first window that we see on the screen when the computer is ready to work. 

 b. What is an icon? List the four common icons that are displayed on the desktop.

Ans: A small picture on the desktop is called an icon. Eg. Recycle bin, My computer, User icon, Control panel.

c. What is the use of Recycle Bin?

Ans: Recycle Bin is used to keep temporarily deleted files and folders. 

d. What is a file?

Ans: A file is an object that stores data, information, settings, or commands that are used with a computer program.

e. What is a folder?

Ans: A folder is a virtual location or place where programs, files, and other folders are stored.

f. What are windows accessories? List any four accessories of Windows 7.

Ans: Windows accessories are the small useful programs available with windows operating system software. 

Four accessories of windows 7 are:

i) Sound Recorder ii) Calculator iii) Notepad iv) Paint

g. What is a sound recorder? 

Ans: Sound recorder is a small audio recording program that records sounds and plays them on the computer. 

h. What is the use of Windows Media Player?

Ans: Windows Media Player is a digital audio and video player program that plays audio and video on the computer.

 i. What is a Snipping tool?

Ans: The snipping tool is used to capture a screenshot or any text images on the screen.
